Basic Asian Sauce

This is my favorite Asian sauce! I use it to marinate tofu, as a dipping sauce or as a sauce over Asian inspired dishes! Toasting the sesame seeds brings out a depth of flavor that helps to replace the use of an oil. Soooo good!

Keyword: 15 minutes or less, Asian sauce, Dipping Sauce, marinade, sauce, tamari
Servings: 1 Cup

  • Small Non-stick Saucepan
  • Small Skillet
  • Whisk

  • 2 TBSP Hoisin Sauce, vegan
  • C Tamari Sauce (I use low sodium, GF)
  • 2 TBSP Rice Wine Vinegar
  • C Maple Syrup
  • 6 Med Garlic Cloves, minced
  • 2 Inch Ginger, fresh, minced
  • 2 TBSP Sesame Seeds, toasted
  • C Water
  • 1 TBSP Cornstarch

  • 1 Scallion, thin sliced

  • In a non-stick skillet, over medium high heat, toast the sesame seeds. This can take about 5 minutes. Be careful not to burn them! remove them from the heat and set aside.
  • Add the remaining ingredients to a small sauce pan over medium heat. Whisk the sauce as it heats. As the sauce heats, it will thicken. Cook until desired consistency is achieved.
  • ***This sauce may thicken even more as it cools. You can thin the sauce by adding small amounts of water until the desired consistency is achieved.

Use this sauce as a marinade, a dipping sauce or as a sauce over your favorite Asian dishes!
This will keep in the refrigerator for about 1 week.
